John T. Gunning Sr., age 78, of Canton passed away peacefully at home on October 15th after a long illness with diabetes. John was raised in Quincy and graduated from Quincy High School. He married in 1967 and moved to Canton where he would raise his 4 children. The neighbors on Glendale Way quickly became part of his family. In 1978, he established his own sheet metal company and was an active member of the Local #17 Sheet Metal Union. In later years, he continued in the sheet metal industry with his late son, Tom at Quality Air Metals, Inc. in Holbrook, MA. After retiring in 2011, he spent many hours estimating in the office. His love for his career in the industry made it difficult to leave.
Over the years, he was a longtime coach and referee in Canton Youth Hockey. He took pride in refereeing at the Collegiate level as well. As an avid golfer, he was a proud member of Wampatuck County Club, Walpole County Club & Hyannisport Club.
John was born on September 22, 1942 to the late John M. & Margaret (Devine) Gunning. Beloved husband of Elaine (Hohmann). Proud father of the late Thomas Gunning and his wife Kristen, John Gunning and his wife Kristen, Dianne Wright and her husband Kevin, all of Canton and the Late 2nd Lieutenant Michael Gunning. Brother of Joanne Driscoll and her late husband Jack of Wrentham. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren Patrick, Brendan, Kevin, Shane, Nicole, Michael, Owen, Jessica & Meghan and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be in the Pushard Family Funeral Home 210 Sherman Street Canton, Sunday, October 18th from 2-6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday in St. John the Evangelist Church 700 Washington St., Canton at 10 AM. Interment Canton Corner Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend maintaining Covid-19 protocols.
