J. Daniel Mooney, of Canton, formerly of Carver and Harwich Port, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 8, 2026. He was 70 years old.
Daniel was a talented draftsman and a gifted artist whose creativity expressed itself in many forms. A passionate musician, he shared his love of music as a member of the Boston chapter of the Gay Men’s Chorus. Earlier in his life, he served as the leader of the St. James Music Ministry in Stoughton during the mid-to-late 1970s and early 1980s, where he helped lead weekly prayer meetings and foster a spirit of community through music and fellowship. He was also an accomplished calligraphist and painter, known by family and friends for his remarkable artistic ability and appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship.
Professionally, Daniel worked as a draftsman and served as President of Colonial Land Surveying. He also served for a time as President of Mass Scribes, an organization dedicated to the art and preservation of calligraphy and fine lettering, reflecting his lifelong devotion to artistic expression.
Daniel was born to the late John and Winifred Mooney. Following Winifred’s passing, his father later married Virginia Mooney, who became his stepmother.
He was the devoted spouse of the late Richard Blakeley.
Daniel was the loving father of Aaron Mooney of Kingston and Brad Mooney and his wife, Zuleika, of New Bedford. He was the proud and cherished grandfather of Jonathon, Melody, Aria, and Ciranda
He was the beloved brother of Michael Mooney of Revere; Richard Mooney and his partner, Nelson, of New Jersey; Paul Mooney and his wife, Lori, of New Hampshire; Mark Mooney and his wife, Judy, of Mattapoisett; James Mooney and his wife, Kimberly, of Canton; and Joan Pagel of Canton. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Daniel was also the former spouse of Deborah (Paduch) McCarthy.
Daniel will be remembered for his creative spirit, gentle nature, and deep appreciation for art and music. He had a thoughtful eye for detail and a quiet warmth that drew people to him. He found great joy in sharing his talents with others. His love of family, creativity, and music lives on through his children and grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Visiting hours will be held at the Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street, Canton, on Sunday, March 15, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 AM at St. James Catholic Church, 560 Page Street, Stoughton. Interment will be private.
