Gordon Thomas Smith, age 89, of Braintree passed away on August 31, 2022 after a brief illness. Gordon was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death.
The beloved son of the late William H and Florence C (McCormick) Smith, dear brother to the late Robert H Smith, Gloria A Marshall and Geraldine F Padial. Gordon was born, raised and educated in Milton. A proud Navy Veteran, he served as a 2nd class Aviation Electrician Petty Officer while stationed at Barbers Point in O'ahu, Hawaii. Gordon received the National Defense Service Medal. He went on to receive his Bachelors Degree from Boston University and his Masters in Education from University of Massachusetts Boston.
Gordon raised his family in Canton for many years, eventually moving to Braintree.
Mr. Smith was a teacher at the Milton Pierce Junior High School from 1962 through his retirement in 1994. He served as a Department Head for Social Studies and coached softball, ice hockey and track.
Gordon, along with his nephew, Robbie Marshall, opened a hockey sporting goods store in Quincy, called the Skatesmith Shop. After closing the store, "Gordo", as the kids referred to him, would sharpen skates for the neighborhood kids out of his garage.
A natural athlete, he enjoyed playing tennis and golf. He was an avid Boston sports fan. He and his wife June, enjoyed spending winters with their lifelong friends in Venice Island, Florida.
Family was most important. He spent time with them whenever possible and enjoyed Sunday dinners at one of his daughters homes. He loved holidays, his most treasured, Independence Day. While the 1812 Overture played he would lead a flag march, around the yard, after which he would challenge guests with historical trivia questions.
Mr. Smith is survived by his devoted wife June S (Metivier) Smith, his loving daughters, Deborah A Sarno and her husband Mark of Norwell, Pamela M Lameiras and her husband Steven of Marshfield, Valerie C Smith and Lisa K Smith both of Walpole, and his cherished grandchildren Amanda Cotter-Penza and her husband Patrick, Jillian Sarno Higdon and her husband Brian, Justin Sarno and his fiancé Julianna Paniss, Jessica Sarno, James Lameiras, and Michael Lameiras, and great grand children, Maxwell and Alexander Penza and Luke Higdon.
