Obituary for Caryl Antonio (Dunakin)
Caryl Antonio (Dunakin), a pillar of the Sharon community, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, with family members and loved ones after a sudden medical event. Her vibrant spirit, unwavering dedication to those she loved, and lifelong commitment to Sharon will be deeply missed.
Born at Newton Wellesley Hospital and raised the majority of her life in Sharon, Caryl was a daughter of the late Johanna and Harold Dunakin. She cherished her family and found immense joy in her role as sister to (predeceased) Donald Dunakin and surviving brother, Alan Dunakin. Caryl met her soulmate, James J. Antonio, on a trip to Bermuda while working at Liberty Mutual in Boston. Their serendipitous encounter blossomed into a beautiful marriage that spanned 52 years. Together, they built a loving family, raising their children, Kimberly A. Sherman (and husband Russell) and Jason J. Antonio (and wife Portia), in Sharon. Caryl's legacy extends to her four grandchildren, Grant D. Sherman, Brandon D. Sherman, Luca J. Antonio, and Nola J. Antonio, who held a special place in her heart.
Caryl's passion for her community extended far beyond her residence. A graduate of Sharon High School (class of 1960), she continued to be actively involved in Sharon after attending Chandlers School for Women in Boston. Caryl's dedication was evident in her volunteer work. She played a key role in coordinating Sharon High School reunions, ensuring that classmates could reconnect and celebrate their shared memories. Her faith and desire to serve others led her to volunteer at the First Congregational Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Society and even served as a Deacon. Caryl was also a longtime volunteer with the Fortnightly Club of Sharon and a dedicated Girl Scout leader, shaping the lives of countless young girls.
Caryl wasn't just a volunteer; she was a cheerleader. Her unwavering support extended to her family. She was a devoted wife to James and a loving mother to Kimberly and Jason. This enthusiasm translated to her role as a grandmother. Caryl was a familiar face at her grandchildren's sporting events, rain or shine, never missing an opportunity to cheer them on. Her kindness and generosity extended beyond her family. Caryl was known for her willingness to help anyone in need, whether a friend, neighbor, or even a stranger. Her genuine warmth and compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
A testament to the impact Caryl had on Sharon, a Church Service will be held in her honor on Saturday, June 1st, at 10:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Sharon (29 N. Main Street, Sharon). There will be a small reception afterward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Caryl's memory to the First Congregational Church of Sharon. Caryl's absence leaves a void, but the memories of her kindness, dedication, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.
